Why Do You Keep Remembering? is a TikTok trend in which alternate universe, often eerie versions of memes and pop culture imagery with a missing element are displayed over the song "Dialtone" by Undertale creator and composer Toby Fox. The trend is inspired by an Avocado Animations video in which Velma from the Velma cartoon remembers her past self in various iterations of Scooby-Doo as Scooby, who has killed all her past selves, wonders why she keeps remembering. The trend was popularized in March 2026 and is very similar to the What If It Was All Just a Dream? memes, with some iterations also using the caption, "It was all a dream."

Origin

On February 15th, 2023, YouTuber^[1] Avocado Animations posted an animation titled "Velma Meets the Original Velma" that gained over 18.2 million views in three years. In the animation, Velma from the highly criticized Velma animated series has flashbacks to her previous lives as different iterations of the character seen in past Scooby-Doo adaptations. It is revealed that Scooby had to kill these Velmas after she questioned why he could talk. He wonders why she is able to remember these past lives and kills her, too.

On March 8th, 2026, TikToker^[2] @exaverthebest posted a video set to the song "Dialtone" by Toby Fox, where several uncanny, altered versions of well-known meme and pop culture images are shown one after another, garnering over 320,000 views in two weeks. The caption reads, "why do you keep remembering why do you keep remembering why do you keep remembering why do you keep remembering why do you keep remembering."
