Wide Ryu

About

Wide Ryu refers to a nickname and jokes about the character Ryu's design in the upcoming Capcom fighting game Street Fighter 6, which depicts him as much beefier than he was in previous iterations of the series. In late February 2022 following the announcement trailer of SF6, Wide Ryu was used as an exploitable in memes, as well as in fan art depictions.

Origin

On February 21st, 2022, Capcom announced a new mainline game in the Street Fighter series, Street Fighter 6, by showing a teaser featuring series veterans Ryu and Luke, with Ryu's body shape being much wider and beefier than before (shown below).

Immediately after the teaser was posted, fans began pointing out how Ryu grew notably more swole through the series. For example, on February 21st, Twitter user JohnnyChandra6^[1] posted a comparison of Ryu's designs from Street Fighter's 3, 4, 5 and 6 (shown below), receiving over 50 likes in roughly 24 hours.

Spread

Jokes about Ryu's girth quickly spread on Twitter in late February 2022. For example, user @kuusoukanvas^[2] posted a comparison between Ryu and the Ben Swolo meme on February 21st (shown below, left). User @DreamCastGuy^[3] posted an even wider version of Ryu that same day, gaining over 100 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).

Fan art also emphasized the enormous size of Ryu. For example, on February 21st, Twitter user @RCaseDrawsStuff^[4] posted art of Wide Ryu that gained over 40 retweets and 190 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, left). User @colorreaper^[5] then posted art that gained over 120 retweets and 890 likes in the same time period (shown below, right).

Ryu's Penis

Additionally, some users argued that they could make out the outline of Ryu's penis in his pants from the teaser. Adam Ellis tweeted,^[6] "Capcom announced Street Fighter 6 and nobody is talking about Ryu's big fat dong??? Wtf you guys," gaining over 770 retweets and 6,100 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, left). User @KaiserNeko^[7] also tweeted, "Ryu's dick print, give me the strength to make it through the day," gaining over 330 retweets and 3,100 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
