About
WMAF is an internet slang and acronym that stands for "White Male Asian Female". Online, it is used to describe interracial couples that consists of a White man and an East Asian woman. Memes about WMAF often contain stereotypes, racism, raceplay or race-bait.
Origin
The origin of the acronym is unknown. The earliest traceable use as an hashtag on Instagram was in a post made by loveknowsnocolor on August 28th, 2013.[1] The page generally shared photos of random interracial couples of all combinations.[2] Its earliest traceable use on 4chan is from February 10th, 2012, on the /a/ board.[3] The first entry of Urban Dictionary on the meaning of WMAF was made on December 26th, 2014, by Indian Bastard, and it received over 15,500 thumbs up in 8 years.[4]
History
Although it's impossible to trace historically the first instances of what can be considered in the modern era as a WMAF relationship, an early example can be made of Hjør Fleinson Hálfsson of Augvald, king of Avaldsnes (in modern-day Norway) and Ljufvina, a princess of Mongolian descent. (shown, below) [5] Their twin sons, Geirmund and Hamund Heljarskinn, were born around 850 AD.[6]
Accounts were taken of European sailors and merchants and their interactions with Asian colonies and traders, particularly with Japan. The Portuguese purchased large numbers of Japanese slave girls to bring to Portugal for sexual purposes, as noted by the Church in 1555.[7] There are multiple depictions by Japanese artists from the 17th and 18th centuries depicting Dutch, French and American sailors with Japanese courtesans, many of them of erotic nature.[8][9][10] After World War II, as many as 45,000 Japanese war brides were wed to (mostly White) American men,[11][12] and 650 more to Australian men.[13] After the Korean War, over 6,000 Korean women came as wives and fiancées of American servicemen, a cohort sometimes known as the Korean War Brides.[14]
Reception
According to statistics released by the U.S. Census Bureau, released on November 21st, 2021, WMAF is the most common non-Hispanic interracial marriage, numbering to 902,000 marriages and being 25.4% of all interracial marriages in the United States of America. [15] On October 22nd, 2022, content creator Brian Xu described this phenomenon as "statistically weird", due to WMAF singlehandedly almost outnumbering WMBF, AMWF and BMWF marriages combined (shown, below).[16][17]
On the internet, WMAF is often the target of slander, which comes from netizens of various political and ideological sides.[18][19][20] Incel communities openly hate WMAF and mainly condemn Asian women.[21][22][23][24][25] Asian male-dominated spaces on Reddit and other websites also detest it, arguably more than any other group.[26][27][28][29] White supremacist and alt-right cartoonists such as A. Wyatt Mann, Hedgewik and (more subtly) StoneToss, all commonly displayed sentiment against miscenation towards East Asians in their comics.[30][31][32] Some liberal and left-leaning groups consider WMAF to be controversial, blaming racial fetishization, colonialism and the fact that female Asian-American celebrities are also often in WMAF relationships, sometimes portraying that on the big screen.[33][34] It could be argued that WMAF is actually underrepresented in media, taking into consideration the real life numbers and stereotypically common sight of said relationships.[35][36] As noticed by Redditors who have different opinions on the matter, WMAF couples are quite popular on Chinese social media site Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book),[37][38] which has at least two verified couples with a large following: Aria and Brandon (with over 350,000 followers), and Alfie and Angel (with over 190,000 followers).[39][40]

In the Twitter thread, it was also pointed out that the Asian female director, Chloe Zhao, has a White boyfriend herself.[42] On December 29th, 2021, Instagram meme accounts "was" and "totally" shared a supportive post towards Macaulay Culkin and Brenda Song, who had welcomed their first child (shown below, right).
