WTF Was That Damage My Guy refers to a viral Twitch VOD of streamer spiffykun[1] getting damaged and chased by an Enderman while playing Minecraft. In the video, spiffykun attacks an Enderman, which attacks him back, nearly draining all of his health. Spiffykun yells, "What the fuck was that damage, my guy?" and escapes up a flight of stairs, looking back twice and screaming when he sees the Enderman still chasing him.
Origin
On June 18th, 2019, spiffykun was streaming Minecraft on Twitch when the incident with the Enderman occurred. The footage was clipped by Twitch users xNekoDays[2] and Michael3399,[3] the former clip hitting over 23 thousand views and the latter 215 thousand in just over a year. On the same day, spiffykun uploaded the clip to his YouTube channel,[4] garnering over 76 thousand views and 2.9 thousand likes in 15 months (shown below).
Originally, spiffykun uploaded the clip to his Twitter page, but that post is currently lost as their account was suspended on February 13th, 2020.
Spread
On June 21st, 2019, YouTuber DEUS VULT[5] uploaded a longer version of the clip to YouTube, garnering over 14 million views and 639 thousand likes in 15 months (shown below, left). On July 1st, YouTuber Scicool Gamique re-uploaded the clip to their channel, garnering over 1.6 million views in 14 months.[6]
As the clip gained attention, people started making memes out of it. On July 3rd, Reddit user strxss uploaded a version of the clip that ends on the first scream to r/perfectlycutscreams,[7] garnering 117 upvotes in a year. On July 12th, YouTuber Meme Man[8] uploaded a compilation of WTF Was That Damage My Guy memes, garnering over 62 thousand views in 14 months (shown below, left). On July 16th, YouTuber scaneloPT[9] uploaded a video titled, "WTF WAS THAT DAMAGE MY GUY (but it's slightly scarier)," a version of the clip but edited to be scary (shown below, right). The video gained over 89 thousand views and 2.2 thousand likes in the same stretch of time.
New variations of the video continue to circulate across the web. The titular phrase has become a meme itself, used particularly on Twitter as a reaction.
