Your Mother Hung Herself or Asuka "Hey Carnage Do You Know Candice" refers to a series of memes where Asuka from the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion tries to pull the Candice Who? prank on Carnage from the Spider-Man franchise, inspiring Carnage to yell at her, "your mother hung herself," a reference to Asuka's mother's suicide.^[7] The exploitable four-panel image macro was first posted to iFunny in late January 2022, inspiring variations over the following month.

Origin

On January 6th, 2022, Instagram^[1] user seinpants posted a four-panel webcomic where Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion asks Carnage from the Spider-Man franchise, "Hey Carnage, do you know Candice?" Carnage, knowing it's a prank, responds, "Hey Asuka, do you know a good movie when you see one?" resulting in a shocked expression from Asuka. This is a reference to Asuka's mother having committed suicide. The fourth panel shows the cover of Venom: Let There Be Carnage (shown below). The post gained over 511 likes in a month. It was reposted by Instagram^[2] user spooked_memes.v4 on January 10th, gaining over 3,000 likes in a similar span of time.

On January 25th, 2022, Twitter^[3] user jokergunmashups posted an edit of the webcomic where Carnage's dialogue is replaced with, "YOUR MOTHER HUNG HERSELF GRAAAAAAAH ! ! !" gaining over 13,600 likes in three weeks (shown below).

The meme inspired variations in the following days. On January 28th, 2022, Twitter^[6] user blottso posted a version replacing Carnage with The Annoying Orange, (shown below). The post gained over 15,000 likes in over three weeks.

On February 2nd, Twitter^[4] user Funny_Mechanism posted a voiced-over version of the meme, gaining over 3,300 likes in over two weeks (shown below). Twitter^[5] user xSaki__Chanx provided the voice lines for Asuka.

The meme also spread to the /r/evangelionmemes^[8] subreddit. On February 6th, 2022, Redditor Blu3Subaru posted a version of the meme replacing Carnage with Big Smoke, referencing Big Smoke's Order, gaining over 400 upvotes in under a day (shown below, left). On the same day, Redditor Kabanere posted a version to /r/evangelionmemes^[9] where Venom is asked the question and apologizes to Asuka, gaining over 50 upvotes in under a day (shown below, right).
