About

Blaze the Cat is a character from the Sonic the Hedgehog series of games and media. Blaze is depicted as a pyrokinetic princess from Sonic Rush who proved to be a fan-favorite character, showing up in subsequent entries in the series, as well as in memes and fan art.

Origin

Blaze the Cat was introduced to the series in the game Sonic Rush for the Nintendo DS, which came out on November 15th, 2005. The character was meant to be similar to Sonic but still offering her own unique twist on gameplay and abilities. This made her well-received by fans, who started to create fan art and memes of the character, leading Sega to include the character in Sonic 06 and create a sequel to Sonic Rush a year after. On April 24th, 2018, the Twitter[1] account @VGArtAndTidbits uploaded what is reportedly character artwork of Blaze before her inception, showing the different ways she could have turned out (shown below).

One of the earliest examples of memes involving Blaze played off her being a cat, as there are plenty of cat memes to adapt Blaze to. This can be seen in the post on July 26th, 2014, in which DeviantArt user Sonic-Fan-For-Ever[2] uploaded a meme of Blaze the Cat pretending to be Grumpy Cat (shown below).

In the Sonic 06 game, Blaze is seen partnering with Silver the Hedgehog for the majority of the game, leading to the community shipping them in fan art and memes. An example of this can be seen in the Imgflip fan art post by SurlyKong69[3] on August 17th, 2021, featuring Blaze and Silver exclaiming their love for each other (shown below).
