About
The Egg Crack Challenge is an internet challenge where one person cracks an egg using another person's forehead while filming their reaction. The challenge was popularized on TikTok in August 2023 and garnered controversy, as many of the videos feature mothers cracking eggs on their children's heads, which some people online suggested might hurt children.
Origin
On August 5th, 2023, TikToker[1] @nayelilaredo44 posted a video tagged "#eggcrackchallenge" where she cracks an egg using her daughter's forehead, then puts the egg in a bowl. The child cries, then her mom helps her crack an egg on her head as retaliation. The video gained over 728,000 views in two weeks (shown below). This is the earliest known video of the challenge.

Spread
The trend spread over the course of August 2023. On August 8th, 2023, TikToker[2] @leeann.braun posted a video cracking an egg on her daughter's head, garnering over 526,000 views in nine days (shown below, left). On August 9th, TikToker[3] @samuelldntv posted a video cracking an egg on his dad's head, garnering over 841,000 views in eight days (shown below, right).

On August 11th, TikToker[4] @navannah.angel posted a video where she does the challenge on her dog, garnering over 2.4 million views in six days (shown below).

On August 16th, X[5] user @Yosleeze posted a compilation of the trend only showing mothers cracking eggs on their kids' heads, garnering over 34,400 likes in a day. On August 17th, X[6] page @Dexerto reposted the video, writing, "The latest TikTok trend is just hurting your child?" garnering over 6,500 likes in under six hours (shown below). That day, X[7] user @mokapotsue reposted the video, writing, " yk how sick you have to be to crack an egg on a 2 year olds head for shits and giggles and then post it on tiktok likekdhdks," garnering over 150 likes in under a day.

As the trend continued to spread online, various publications began reporting on it,[8] with some notably criticizing it as "Parents at Their Worst."[9]
