"I Have My Whole Life Ahead of Me." No You Don't, The X Is Coming is a recaption meme format based on a viral version of The Fog Is Coming meme. The memes imply that a terrifying unstoppable force is coming for someone optimistic about their life prospects and is about to either cut their life short or cause a drastic turn in for the worse.
Origin
Prior to March 13th, 2022, during the peak popularity of The Fog Is Coming trend about ominous, assumingly dangerous fog threatening to consume Earth, an unknown user posted an image of a foggy forest paired with a caption referencing the meme. On March 13th and 24th, Instagram[1] user memesofreedom and Redditor[2] screenybeany451 made the earliest discovered reposts of the meme, with the posts gaining over 40 likes and 60 upvotes in one year, respectively.
On April 1st, 2022, Instagram[3] meme page grandmas.butt reposted the image, with the post garnering over 92,000 likes in one year.
Spread
On April 23rd, 2022, iFunny[4] user Neco_Arc_Enthusiast and Instagram[5] user getshrekt192 posted the earliest found derivative memes based on the image, one a Neco-Arc edit that gained over 60 smiles and the other a Frostpunk reference that didn't get traction (shown below, left and center). On May 4th, 2022, Instagram[6] meme page trashcanpaul reposted a now-deleted TikTok video caption meme that received over 549,000 views and 48,900 likes in one year (shown below, right).
On May 15th, 2022, Instagram[7] page site_17b shared an SCP-096 version of the meme created by an unknown user that gained over 20,300 likes in one year (shown below, left). Also that day, Instagram[8] page halfvampirehalfsuccubus posted a Berserk version of the meme that gained over 4,200 likes in the same period (shown below, right)>
The format maintained popularity online through 2022 and 2023, with users often referencing various media by recaptioning one or more words and replacing the image.
