About
Imagine X-ing Me Because You Think I'm X Then BOOM is an exploitable Facebook post that's recaptioned by meme creators on Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram by substituting various verbs and nouns into the phrasal template, making it increasingly deep fried and moldy with each edit. The most common iterations are, "Imagine Dating Me," "Imagine Following Me" and the original "Imagine Adding Me." As stated in the meme, the viewer is drawn into following the imagined shitposter, only to be subjected to something unforeseen, like 83 posts a day. The original was posted in mid-2019.
Origin
The meme is originally from a Facebook text post, however, the original creator is unknown. It was most likely created in late 2018 because the first known use of the text online is in a tweet posted on December 14th, 2018, by Twitter[1] user _jinhui23, which reads, "Imagine adding me because you think i’m cute then BOOM 83 posts in a row of the dumbest shit known to man," copied and pasted from the original image. On April 13th, 2019, the Facebook[2] page Not original, but still funny. posted the original image and is the first known posting online, receiving 26 reactions in three years (shown below).
Spread
On December 20th, 2019, Instagram[3] page gramgirl_blondie_kay reposted the photo, receiving over 430 likes in two and a half years and being the first one on Instagram to share it. On January 20th, 2020, Instagram[4] page patiasfantasyworld recaptioned the word "adding" to "following," earning roughly 4,200 likes in two years (shown below, left). On January 16th, 2020, Instagram[5] page hotmessbian exploited patiasfantasyworld's version, adding in words about being gay and earning roughly 3,300 likes in two years (shown below, right).
Many more iterations started to appear on Instagram following the aforementioned ones, becoming increasingly deep-fried, moldy and absurd. For instance, on April 26th, 2020, the Instagram[6] page garfuckingmonday earned roughly 3,300 likes in two years for one that read, "Imagine following me because 83 posts in a row of the dumbest shit known to man and then BOOM i'm cute" (shown below, left). On October 3rd, 2020, Instagram[7] page analuciifer reposted a meme originally made by bigballofpoo (since-deleted) which replaced the words to read, "Imagine dating me because you think i'm mentally stable then BOOM i descend into a manic state and eat you," earning roughly 2,200 likes in a year and a half (shown below, right).
As the meme spread to Tumblr[8] and iFunny[9] towards late 2020 and into 2021, the subject matter became increasingly associated with schizoposting and idolizing mass-shitposting. Additionally, video memes using the image macro started surfacing in mid-2021. For instance, Instagram[10] page papa.panara posted a video meme on August 5th, 2021 that received roughly 12,600 views and 2,100 likes in one year (shown below).
