About
Is That All You Need? refers to an exploitable image macro of a black-and-white webcomic originally illustrated by cartoonist Guy Downes in mid-2020. The one-panel comic shows a man pushing many labeled boxes on a cart asking another man with only one box, "Is that all you need?" They also appear to be leaving a garage sale or moving. The image was first shared on Twitter but was later reposted to Instagram, Facebook and Reddit. Meme creators inserted their own words onto the boxes, giving examples of things that they do or don't need.
Origin
On July 22nd, 2020, cartoonist Guy Downes, who is the creator of the online comic series Office Guy Cartoons,[1] published the original image on Twitter. The tweet[2] containing the image (shown below) received only eight likes over the course of a year. The image can also be viewed on his website[3] and is titled "All You Need."
Spread
The image was first shared to Instagram on October 10th, 2020, by Instagram[4] account @starseedsandra. Her post received 32 likes over the course of one year. Her post was also highly edited, putting the image through a filter to make it pink. On October 31st, 2020, Instagram[5] account @verum_bellator01 posted the first known version of the image unedited and received 17 likes.
On November 12th, 2020, the image was reposted to Instagram accounts @iamthebeardgod[6] and @chocolako[7] where it received over 1,000 likes on each account. The meme then received its first remix on Instagram, again on November 12th, 2020, most likely because of this exposure. The remix was posted by Instagram[8] account @infinite.cum.haters who re-edited the word "Love" to read "strange images." The meme (shown below) received 54 likes over one year.
The original cartoon was then reposted to Reddit[9] on November 15th, 2020, by a now-deleted Redditor to the subreddit /r/Anticonsumption. There, the cartoon received roughly 2,600 upvotes over the course of one year. Two days later, the image made its way to /r/wholesomememes, posted by Redditor[10] Farouk_mercury. There, it received roughly 9,600 likes over the course of one year.
The template received its first remix on Reddit on November 15th, 2020, made by Redditor[11] RX-ZILLA and posted to the subreddit /r/Dabs. The meme (shown below) received roughly 490 upvotes in one year and was reposted to /r/rosin[12] the next day.
The meme received more iterations on Instagram going into November 2020. Two early variants posted to Instagram after its spread on Reddit were made by Instagram accounts @qualimetrics_media_solutions_[13] (shown below, left) and @ilovesickdrops[14] (shown below, right).
The template continued to be exploited across platforms going into 2021.
