About
Jeff the Land Shark is a character in the 2024 video game Marvel Rivals, serving as a strategist hero known for his unique abilities and friendly demeanor. Jeff was created by writer Kelly Thompson and artist Daniele di Nicuolo, first appearing in West Coast Avengers Volume 3 #6 in October 2018. The character gained viral attention in early December 2024, after the release of Marvel Rivals for his unique ability and the comical ways players used Jeff in the game. Jeff also sparked fan art and memes on X / Twitter and DeviantArt.
Origin
Landsharks first appeared in West Coast Avengers Volume 3 #1 in October 2018, created by writer Kelly Thompson and artist Stefano Caselli. In the comic's #6 issue Jeff was introduced and by issue #7 he gained his official name after being adopted by Gwen Poole as part of an ultimately abandoned running gag where Gwen would adopt (and lose) many infant animals and name them "Jeff."[5]
Marvel Rivals was officially released on December 6th, 2024, featuring an array of Marvel Comics heroes, including Jeff the Land Shark, which was introduced on July 25th, 2024, in a YouTube[1] video revealing the character's powers and design. The video (seen below) received more than 187,000 views and 8,600 likes in 5 months.

The introduction of Jeff the Land Shark quickly caught the attention of the gaming community, with players sharing gameplay tips on how to use the character on Marvel Rivals, fan art and memes. For example, on December 7th, 2024, X[2] user @VenomDbd uploaded a video joking about how people view players who chose Jeff in the PvP game (seen below), which garnered over 1 million views and 64,000 likes in two days.

On the same day, TikTok[3] user @momothiccems posted a video showing Jeff the Land Shark wearing a shark costume in-game (seen below), which amassed more than 403,000 plays and 57,000 likes in two days.

On December 5th, 2024, YouTube[4] user @Arx_UK posted a gameplay video playing as Jeff the Land Shark in Marvel Rivals, which received roughly 12,000 views and 224 likes in four days.
