Me Picking My College Major, also known as Me Picking My Future Career, is an exploitable comparison image macro of a man throwing darts with his hand over his eyes versus an image of a hacker in front of six computer monitors. Meme creators who remix the template follow a phrasal template that's roughly "Me picking X / Me picking X," typically showing a humorous contrast between a more serious decision first and a more frivolous decision second. The first known posting of the image macro occurred on Instagram in March 2021. Remixes of the meme appeared across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter throughout the rest of 2021 and into 2022.

Origin

On March 3rd, 2021, the Instagram^[1] page throwingfits posted the first meme using the template, using captions that read, "Me picking my college major / me picking a new jacket for spring." The image (shown below) received roughly 6,400 likes in one year.

Spread

On March 6th, 2021, Facebook^[2] page pinnacleofcynical reposted the meme, receiving roughly 18,000 reactions and 15,000 shares over the course of seven months. On March 7th, the meme was reposted to /r/MemeTemplatesOfficial^[3] where it received roughly 10,300 upvotes in one year.

On March 8th, 2022, Instagram^[4] account tripod_palace posted a version that replaced the top caption with, "me picking a future career," earning roughly 1,300 likes in one year (shown below, left). However, the original poster is most likely a since-deleted Twitter user.

On March 10th, 2021, the image was reposted to the Tumblr^[5] blog softblockwashere-deactivated202, earning roughly 12,500 notes over the course of one year. Also on March 10th, Redditor lisabmore exploited the meme, replacing the bottom caption to read, "me picking which paint to buy from Redd," in reference to Animal Crossing. They posted it to /r/AnimalCrossing^[6] and, over the course of one year, received roughly 27,100 upvotes (shown below, right).

More iterations were made and shared across platforms going into the remainder of 2021. For instance, on August 11th, Instagram^[7] page internet_guide posted a version that replaced the word "spring" with "autumn," earning roughly 3,700 likes over the course of seven months (shown below, left). On January 15th, 2022, Twitter^[8] user cadavruwu posted a version that referenced Corpse Husband YouTube videos, earning roughly 2,300 likes in two months (shown below, right).
