"Nigga, That's Kawaii" is an expression indicating that something is adorable or cute, which is often used to caption photographs of black men displaying merchandise or engaging in activities typically associated with the Otaku subculture.

Origin

On September 16th, 2011, FunnyJunk^[1] user Pokokomo uploaded a cropped version of a picture from the ManyLemons^[2] photoblog (shown below, left) with the caption "Nigga / Thats Kawaii" (shown below, right). In the next four years, the picture gained over 23,000 views and 800 points.

Spread

On March 29th, 2012, the Spanish-language Internet humor site Taringa^[3] highlighted several "nigga that's kawaii" image macros. The following day, the Tumblr^[4] blog "Nigga That's Kawaii" was launched. On September 23rd, FunnyJunk^[6] user quantumlegend submitted an image macro titled "Kawaii Niggas," featuring several black men holding Lucky Star posters with the caption "Who needs swag / when you're kawaii" (shown below).

On October 20th, Redditor silvester submitted a post titled "Shit nigga, that's so kawaii my doki doki just committed sudoku" to the /r/nocontext^[5] subreddit, where it garnered upwards of 1,200 votes (93% upvoted) and 30 comments prior to being archived. On January 7th, 2013, YouTuber yoyoo33 uploaded a video titled "Nigga dats kawaii," featuring a man dancing to the Japanese pop song "Happy Synthesizer" by Luka & GUMI while wearing a loin cloth (shown below, left). On April 7th, 2014, YouTuber Nigga Kawai uploaded a music video titled "Nigga Kawaii Desu," in which a black man wearing green pants dances to a Japanese pop song (shown below, right).
