Open-chan Flying Away is a viral video of an inflatable decoration of Taiwanese 7-Eleven mascot "Open-chan" getting caught in a strong gust of wind, causing it to fly into the sky. Once the video was shared on Twitter, users remixed the clip by adding humorous music over the footage.

Origin

On December 17th, 2022, the YouTube channel 小麥MAX posted footage of a Taiwanese 7-Eleven mascot Open-chan inflatable getting blown away by a gust of wind, causing it to soar into the sky. It gained over 3,500 views in two days on the platform[1] (shown below).


The following day, the Twitter account @Takigare3 reposted the clip. There, it went viral, gaining over 5.4 million views in one day. The tweet gained over 35,000 retweets and 191,000 likes (shown below).


Spread

The clip inspired many posters to remix it by setting it to music. Twitter user Takigare3 was the first to do this on December 18th, 2022, posting a music remix just minutes after they posted the original clip. Their tweet gained over 400 retweets and 3,000 likes in one day (shown below, top). Later that day, Twitter user @deanbray1 then posted a remix set to "Defying Gravity" from the musical Wicked, gaining over 470 retweets and 2,300 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, bottom).


Other prominent examples include a remix by @Mcreedance that used an orchestral version of "Simple and Clean" from Kingdom Hearts, gaining over 70 retweets and 300 likes in one day (shown below, top) and a post by @smashfury that used the song "Komm, süsser Tod" from Neon Genesis Evangelion (shown below, bottom).
