Pokemon Sun and Moon Cover Parodies is a photoshop meme featuring digitally edited variations of the cover art for the upcoming Pokémon video games Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, set for release in the final quarter of 2016.

Origin

On February 25th, 2016, the tech news blog Nerdleaks^[5] posted two logos registered with the trademarks Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, noting that the requests had been filed by Nintendo earlier that day (shown below).

That day, Redditor Strike_Gently uploaded photoshopped versions of the covers featuring the characters Charlie Kelly and Mac McDonald from Season 4 Episode 13 "The Nightman Cometh" in the television show It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia to the /r/funny^[6] subreddit (shown below).

The following day, Nintendo officially announced the upcoming games during their Pokemon Direct event (shown below).

On February 27th, 2016, Redditor GotAnyMoreOfThem posted a version of the cover featuring the screaming sun from the television show Rick and Morty to /r/rickandmorty^[4] (shown below, left). The following day, FunnyJunk^[3] user aznzeus submitted photoshopped covers with a variety of characters from other franchises (shown below, right).

Meanwhile, Tumblr user Greninjaaaa posted two variants featuring the Super Mario games Super Mario Sunshine and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (shown below).^[2] Within two weeks, the post gained over 7,500 notes.

On March 7th, 2016, Twitter user @Woopsire tweeted a photoshopped cover with the character Mung Daal from the TV show Chowder.^[1] Within one week, the tweet garnered upwards of 1,000 likes and 920 retweets.
