Shrek in a Mud Bath is an image macro series featuring a screenshot from the 2010 film Shrek Forever After of Shrek frowning while sitting in a mudbath.

Origin

On May 21st, 2010, the film Shrek Forever After was released in the United States.^[1] In the film, the character Shrek deals with domestic life. In one montage, Shrek attempts to relax in a mud bath when his wife Fiona (voiced by Mike Meyers and Cameron Diaz) calls him to fix the toilet (clip below).

On October 13th, 2016, Imgur^[6] GrabALadyByTheTush shared an image edit of the scene showing Shrek at a laptop (shown below).

Spread

On October 14th, Facebook ^[2] account tioDarkmaknetar shared the a version of the meme as a reaction image. The post received more than 1,400 reactions, 615 shares and 40 comments in less than four years (shown below).

Months later, the image continued to spread. For example, on December 28th, 2016, an anonymous 9GAG ^[3] user shared a variation with the caption "when you give your friend a broken condom and your mom gets pregnant" (shown below, left).

On July 9th, 2019, Redditor ^[4] God_Zamasu shared a variation with the caption "When you in the hot tub with strangers and quietly slip a fart and suddenly feel something mushy start floating to the surface." The post received more than 6,300 points (97% upvoted) in less than one year (shown below, center).

The following year, Redditor^[5] skibbledibs shared a variation with the caption "When your food sounds like a MK19 automatic grenade launcher in the microwave but it still comes out cold" and a subtitle for Shrek that reads "bruh." The post received more than 830 points (95% upvoted) in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).
