The Sonic Frontiers Ninja is a robot mini-boss found in the video game Sonic Frontiers. After the character was revealed in a gameplay trailer in June 2022, it inspired fan art, including Rule 34 pieces, becoming a somewhat infamous character in the Sonic fandom.

Origin

On June 13th, 2022, Sega released a series of screenshots and a gameplay trailer for their upcoming game Sonic Frontiers. The gameplay and screenshots showcased the first miniboss of the game, "Ninja", a tall humanoid robot designed with simple shapes and abstract feminine proportions (shown below). The images were posted to Gematsu^[1] that day (shown below).

The fight with Ninja was showcased in a trailer for the game released that same day (shown below).

On June 13th, 2022, various users on Twitter posted their reactions to Ninja, mostly in response to the feminine design and animations. On the day of the reveal, video game streamer and Gamescage (@onthedownlotho) posted a tweet about his feelings toward the character, inspiring various reactions from many users and gaining 17,000 likes in just over a year (shown below).^[2] Among the accounts who responded to the tweet are the official Sega and Sonic Twitter accounts.^[3][4] This interaction would later receive a comic by the artist @canni_can, gaining over 8000 likes (shown below).^[9]

As a result of this post, various fans react to fan art and memes of Ninja, using memes such as "Would," "Hear Me Out," and Shadow the Hedgehog saying "looks female enough" reaction image. A screenshot of two reactions to Ninja was posted to Reddit's /r/SonictheHedgehog^[9] that day by user nyangames, gaining over 730 points in one year (shown below).

The reveal also inspired fan art among various online artists, with some Rule 34. Following the reveal, a number of pieces were uploaded to Twitter and other social media websites.^[5][6][7][8]

Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog

Twitter artist @canni_can, who primarily draws art of Ninja, drew two fanarts placing Ninja and Sage within the game Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, with Ninja dressed in a maid outfit, the two posts would gain over 14,000 likes and 7000 likes respectively ^[11][12]. The artist Methados would later create fanart of this fanart ^[13] (shown below).
