About

Tom and Spike Sword fight refers to an exploitable object labeling meme from an episode of the animated series Tom and Jerry in which Tom the cat and Spike the dog are fighting with swords. It is generally paired with a second panel featuring jerry the mouse, either one lifting sunglasses with a smug smile or the meme known as Polish Jerry with an uncomfortable confused expression.

Origin

The image comes from the 1954 Tom and Jerry short "Pet Peeve."[1][2] In the short, Tom and Spike's owners are debating getting rid of either Tom or Spike due to food costs. They disagree on which one should go. The husband makes a deal with his wife, stating "I'll make a deal. The one that catches the mouse can stay." While Tom initially catches Jerry, Tom and Spike fight over who is the one to present Jerry to their owners, with the Swordfight being one of these incidents (shown below).
