About

Crossfire is an online first-person shooter video game released in South Korea in 2007. The game was developed by Smilegate Entertainment and grew to be hugely popular in China. It is recognized as one of the world's most-played video games by player count, with many users likening its gameplay to Counter-Strike. Videos of Chinese players doing Crossfire parkour have been posted to YouTube since at least 2013.

History

Crossfire was first officially released in South Korea on May 3rd, 2007 by Smilegate Entertainment for Microsoft Windows. The game was distributed in China by Tencent.[1] The game was the highest-grossing online game in the year 2013, making over $954 million. The game is sometimes referred to as a CS:GO clone due to its visual and gameplay similarities.[2] Crossfire is free-to-play with in-game purchases. Smilegate claims that Crossfire has over 1 billion registered users, making it the world's most-played video game by player count.[3]

CROSS FIRE MERCENARY FORCES CORPORATION 96

The game's popularity in China is sometimes noted to be aided by its stable internet client, which allows gameplay on relatively unstable connections. Moreover, according to an interview with Crossfire development chief Jang Ina, the game was simplified in order to appeal to Chinese audiences new to video games.[4]

Gameplay

Crossfire is a free-to-play first-person shooter that pits two mercenary corporations named "Black List" and "Global Risk" against each other. Players choose to play as a mercenary from one of the two groups and join online teams that support a maximum of 8 players on either side.

The game has a free currency called "Game Points" that are earned through playing matches, buying premium items or completing missions. Premium and special items are only bought using real money.

TieGuyTravis @TieGuyTravis After ~6 hours with the game I'm almost at a loss for words. I have no idea how this game was cleared for release. Some truly unforgivable game design, performance issues, etc. Unbelievable. TieGuyTravis @TieGuyTravis Feb 9, 2022 I'm reviewing @PlayCrossfireX for @IGN and just got access to the game today along with the rest of the public. Expect a late review on this one. 3:29 AM Feb 10, 2022 109 Retweets 96 Quotes 859 Likes 18 Bookmarks IGN writer on CrossFireX - "After ~6 hours with the game I'm 5319 almost at a loss for words. Apparently it's the most played game in the world and is one of the most financially successful games ever. The franchise is big in China and South Korea, it was originally a PC game back in 2007, but has since spawned movies and TV shows in China. This version is an Xbox exclusive which is why I've probably never come across it. It's a shooter that has a free multiplayer mode that's akin to Counter-Strike but with leveling and character customization. It also has a paid single player campaign. permalink source embed save save-RES parent report give award hide child comments
