About

Ghost of Yotei, also known as Ghost of Tsushima 2, is the sequel to the action-adventure stealth video game Ghost of Tsushima released in July 2020. The upcoming game was announced in September 2024, during PlayStation's State of Play livestream. The game will follow a new female protagonist known as Atsu in the area of Mount Yōtei. The game will take place in 1603, over 300 years after the previous entry. Ghost of Yotei is expected to be released for PS5 in 2025. On social media, the game's new hero sparked some debate and backlash, as some netizens called the sequel "woke" and possibly a DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) character.

History

On September 24th, 2024, Ghost of Yotei was officially announced[1] by Sucker Punch Productions at the PlayStation State of Play event. In a PlayStation blog post written by Andrew Goldfarb, Senior Communications Manager at Sucker Punch Productions, he shared that the sequel's idea is to maintain the core pillars established in Ghost of Tsushima, which is "playing as a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, offering freedom to explore at your own pace, and highlighting the beauty of the world."

The sequel will follow the story of Atsu, a new "Ghost," on a journey taking place in 1603, more than 300 years after the events of the previous game. The "first look" at the new video game was posted to PlayStation's[2] YouTube channel on the same day, amassing over 2.7 million views and 200,000 likes in a day. (seen below)

Ghost of Yotei Woke Drama

As soon as Ghost of Yotei revealed it would follow a female protagonist as the new "Ghost" some fans of the franchise started to call the game "woke" and "DEI," which stands for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, a phrase used to describe organizational frameworks that promote equality and diversity. For example, on September 24th, 2024, X[3] user @MightyKeef screenshotted a tweet by @EndymionYT, in which he criticized the Japanese woman samurai as the new protagonist, and posted the image as a previous tweet writing "I wonder how long until THOSE people start doing the thing they do." The post (seen below) amassed more than 52,000 likes and 3,500 reposts in a day.

Endymion @EndymionYT Ghost of Tsushima sequel stars a Japanese woman samurai warrior because of course it does. They can't help themselves until every franchise that was built on masculinity is replaced by women. Ghost of Yotei is (hopefully) a smaller spin off game, but if this is the true sequel & this is the new main character over Jin Sakai, f--- that. So sick of the forced girlboss narrative man.

On September 24th, 2024, YouTube[4] user @DarkStar777 posted a commentary video about the Ghost of Yotei woke drama, writing that "just because a game has a female protagonist, doesn't mean it's woke." The video (seen below) received more than 7,500 views and 414 likes in a day.

On September 25th, 2024, Reddit[5] user/u/alcatrazcgp posted a meme mocking people who call the upcoming game "woke," amassing more than 1,600 upvotes and 532 comments in a few hours.
