Lovecraft Country is a supernatural horror-fantasy book and television series that uses fantastical monsters as an allegory and metaphor for racial terror in the United States.

History

Book

On February 16th, 2016, publisher Harper-Collins released the book Lovecraft Country in the United States. It follows eight interconnected stories about race in America told through the motifs and conventions of supernatural horror.[1]

Television Series

On May 16th, 2017, Deadline[2] reported that Jordan Peele's "Monkeypaw Productions is teaming with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television on Lovecraft Country, a one-hour drama that has been given a straight-to-series order by HBO."

Three years later, on June 3rd, 2020, HBO released the teaser for the series. Within three months, the video received more than 400,000 views (shown below).

HBO premiered the series on August 16th, 2020.

Book

Publishers Weekly[3] called the book "[a] timely rumination on racism in America refracts an African-American family’s brush with supernatural horrors through the prism of life in the Jim Crow years of the mid-20th century."

Television Series

The review aggregator Metacritic[4] awarded the show a score of 80 based on 39 critical reviews. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes [5] certified the series "Fresh," giving season one a 97% (based on 84 reviews). In their critics consensus, they wrote, "Anchored by Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Jonathan Majors' heroic performances, Misha Green's Lovecraft Country is a thrilling take on Lovecraftian lore that proves the Elder Gods aren't the only thing that goes bump in the cosmos."

Fandom

Launched on May 16th, 2017, the /r/LovecraftCountry[6] subreddit has more than 4,400 members. Months later, in July 2016, HBO launched the @LovecraftHBO Twitter [8] account. In a litt more than three years, the account has more than 29,000 followers.

Two years later, on June 20th, 2019, the Lovecraft Country television series Facebook [7] account launched. The group has more than 16,000 followers and 15,000 likes in less than two years
