Slerf refers to a cryptocurrency meme coin promoted by the X account @SlerfSol. In March 2024, Slerf became the subject of memes and discussions after the creator of the coin claimed they accidentally lost $10 million worth of funds raised via the presale of the coin. News of @SlergSol "burning" the liquidity provider (LP) and losing $10 million was reported on by Bloomberg shortly after, who misattributed the disaster to X user @SlorgoftheSlugs. Subsequently, jokes about "Slog not being on the Slerf team" began making the rounds online, amusing people who found the names silly sounding.

Origin

The X / Twitter account @SlerfSol began promoting the meme coin "Slerf" in March 2024, eventually crossing over $10 million in presale funds from investors, as seen in a March 17th, 2024, post by X user @html_eth (seen below, left).[1] However, on March 18th, @SlerfSol made a post announcing that they had "burned" the LP for the $10 million worth of presales, apologizing to his investors. The post gathered over 5,000 likes in two days (seen below, right).[2]

On March 19th, 2024, @SlerfSol[3] posted a webcomic showing a cartoon slog (resembling a sloth) that looks like the Slerf token telling his parents that he lost $10 million. The post gathered over 1,000 likes in a day (seen below, left). On March 20th, X[4] user @belogi27 made a webcomic joking about the situation as well (seen below, right).

Slorg Is Not On The Slerf Team

On March 18th, 2024, Bloomberg Crypto columnist Matt Levine[5] covered the Slerg coin mishap in an article titled, "Slorg Is Sorry Slerf Was Burnt,"[6] misattributing Slerg's statement to another X user named @SlorgoftheSlugs (seen below).

"Guys I f-ed up," the project's official X account wrote. "I burned the LP and the tokens that were set aside for the airdrop. Mint authority is already revoked so I can not mint them. There is nothing I can do to fix this. I am so f-ing sorry." The Slerf team later went to an X Spaces to elaborate further on the situation. "I'm sick to my stomach," team member Slorg said in a Space on X. "I'm literally about to throw up." "I'm lost for words," they added. "I don't know what to do." Poor Slorg. Basically the way crypto works is that a guy named Slorg makes up a token named Slerf, which is distinguished from other tokens by having a cartoon sloth logo. You send $10 million of Solana crypto tokens to Slorg, and he makes a note to himself that he owes you some Slerfs. Then he accidentally flushes that note down the toilet and, due to the irreversible nature of the blockchain, you get no Slerfs and your money is permanently gone, though Slorg is very sorry.

Various X users joked about the mishap on March 19th, including user @ZeroSuitCamus[7] and @edzitron,[8] both gathering over 4,000 and 1,000 likes, respectively, in less than 24 hours (seen below).
