The First Thing I Look at In a Man Is His Heart, continued The Fact That His Tits Are In Front Of His Heart Is Not My Fault and also written as The First Thing I Look at In a Woman Is Her Heart, is a catchphrase popularized as the caption on a series of exploitable image macros showing various pictures of a man's pectoral muscles or a woman's breasts. The earliest version of the meme relates to women and was first posted online in 2017. In 2022, the format became increasingly popularized in reference to men and male anime characters.
Origin
The earliest known version of the meme was posted to Instagram around March 28th, 2017. It was deleted but archived by awwmemes.com[1] on that date. The meme shows a photograph of a woman's breasts, captioned, "The first thing a man looks at in a woman is her heart. The fact that her tits are in front of her heart is NOT OUR FAULT!"
The caption spread over the following years in similar memes. For example, on December 5th, 2019, iFunny[2] user Daddy_chan posted a version of the meme using an anime woman's breasts, garnering over 46,000 smiles in three years. On January 11th, 2022, Twitter[3] user @Hourly_geto posted a meme using a variation of the caption about men along with images of Suguru Geto from Jujutsu Kaisen, garnering over 6,600 likes in 10 months (shown below).
Spread
The meme spread over the course of 2022 as users replaced the images around the caption, often with another anime character. On January 12th, 2022, a Redditor posted a version of the meme to /r/obeyme,[4] garnering over 890 upvotes in 10 months. On the same day, Twitter[5] user @tanijrou posted a version of the meme using images of Sanemi from Demon Slayer, garnering over 17,000 likes and 3,900 retweets in the same span of time (shown below).
On January 13th, Twitter[6] user @smileytooru posted a similar meme about Sanemi. It was reposted to Facebook[7] page They're all homos that day, garnering over 4,200 reactions and 850 shares in 10 months. On January 15th, Instagram[8] user professorgutsv2 posted a version of the meme using Guts from Berserk, garnering over 3,700 likes in the same rough span of time (shown below, left).
On June 17th, 2022, Instagram[9] user btsophile posted a version of the image with a BTS member, garnering over 24,000 likes in five months. On July 3rd, Twitter[10] user @dendrosdaily posted a Genshin Impact version of the meme, garnering over 15,000 likes in four months (shown below, right). It was reposted to the genshin.era Instagram[11] page, garnering over 33,000 likes in the same span of time.
On September 28th, Facebook[12] user SEISO ねこ posted a female-centric version of the meme, garnering over 3,500 reactions and 680 shares in two months (shown below).
