Turkish Man Yelling "Meow" At An Egg refers to a 2013 viral video taken out-of-context from a man's magic act as part of a tour in Alanya, Turkey. The video went viral on social media, gaining attention on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Origin

On July 12th, 2013, Christoffer Bader uploaded on his YouTube[1] channel a 3 second video of a man yelling “meow” at an egg. He explained on the video description that the scene recorded was part of a magic trick on a tour in Alayna, Turkey. In 9 years since it was uploaded, the video received 10 million views and 175,000 likes.



The video began to become a meme in 2014 as it gradually spread all over social media. At first, it appeared in references, with the earliest known one being this tweet by @lxc999 on Twitter[5] on October 14th, 2014, which can be seen below. While it recieved only nine likes, it became one of the first in a series of tweets referencing the video, tagging friends to view it and ultimately creating early memes about it.

Spread

As the video started to go viral on social media the same week as the above tweet, it spread more rapidly after it was covered in an article by Vice[2], which further explains the story behind the video. Posted on October 17th, 2014, the tweet has 262 likes and 124 retweets in 8 years (seen below).

Through the years the video was reposted by meme pages and people grew founder of the meme, as seen in this tweet by @quietcoolkid[3] on May 25th, 2019, in which she shares her obsession with the video, receiving 250 likes and 45 retweets in four years.

Other variations of video were also posted on social media, like this edited video of the man and his scream multiplying in an ever-expanding grid posted on TikTok[4] in November 29th, 2020, by @_oli_12_. The post received 31,000 views and 876 likes in three years.
