About

Tyler, The Creator Falling From The Sky, also known as Tyler, The Creator Skydiving, refers to a video of rapper Tyler, The Creator falling from the sky and screaming set to the Monsters University theme song. The original video was the music video for his song "JUGGERNAUT" which was posted to YouTube in 2021. The video was made into a greenscreen template, becoming an exploitable meme on TikTok and YouTube in 2023 in which meme creators put the falling Tyler over different backgrounds, inserting him into different settings with a text caption that matched.

Origin

On June 25th, 2021, Tyler, The Creator's YouTube[1] channel uploaded the music video for his song "JUGGERNAUT" which gained roughly 12.5 million views in two years. At the video's 1:18-minute mark, Tyler is seen falling out of the sky while screaming (shown below).

Starting in early 2023, the video clip of Tyler, The Creator falling from the sky started to be used in memes on TikTok, predominantly set to the theme song[2] of the 2013 Pixar movie Monsters Universtiy.[2] Currently, first known meme creator to make a video of this nature was TikToker[3] @kassiusayres on April 1st, 2023, who captioned it, "'Bro Tyler dropped yesterday' / Tyler:" earning roughly 30,100 plays and 5,100 likes in one month (shown below).

Spread

After TikToker[3] @kassiusayres's April 1st video, they uploaded a second TikTok[4] on April 3rd, 2023 that used the same format and went more viral, gaining roughly 4.7 million plays and 712,300 likes in one month (shown below, left). The video referenced the Kid Named Finger meme as well. Going into April 2023, others on TikTok posted original iterations, such as TikToker[5] @fat_pigeon79_pt_2 on April 4th, 2023, gaining roughly 88,300 plays and 17,200 likes in one month (shown below, right).

Soon after, the meme format spread to YouTube. For instance, on April 7th, 2023, YouTuber[6] ManTheyCallNick uploaded an iteration that greenscreened Tyler falling over a Minecraft background, gaining roughly 15,200 views and 1,200 likes in one month (shown below, left). The meme started to peak on YouTube in early May 2023. For instance, on May 6th, 2023, YouTuber[7] Nautilus posted a copycat video of TikToker[4] @kassiusayres's video, gaining roughly 18,800 views and 1,400 likes in three days (shown below, right).
