About
X When You Open Their Ribcage, also known as Violent Anti-Memes, refers to a series of parody fandom generalization anti-memes with captions about violently disemboweling or ripping open the ribcages of obsessive fans of various properties, typically using the phrasal template by replacing the subject at the beginning. The original meme shows The Boss Baby crying and starts "Pokémon fans when you rip open their ribcages." The meme became popularized in November 2021 across multiple social media platforms, including Instagram, Twitter and iFunny. It is meant as an extreme parody of fandom generalization memes.
Origin
On November 5th, 2021, Instagram[1] meme page meme.hummus posted an image macro of the Boss Baby crying captioned "Pokémon fans when you open up their ribcage and slowly start to pull out all their organs," gaining over 8,700 likes in a week (shown below). The meme was reposted by a number of pages in the following days, including Twitter[2] page @LowResContent that day, gaining over 8,200 likes and 940 retweets in the same span of time.
Spread
As the meme spread across social media it inspired a number of variations and image macros referencing it, as well as memes about "ripping open the ribcages" of or "violently disemboweling" rabid fans of various franchises. For example, on November 6th, 2021, Instagram[3] page inhalemybees posted an edited version of the meme replacing "Pokemon fans" with "rainbow dash" and "you" with "pinkie pie," two My Little Pony characters, in a reference to a violent fanfiction Cupcakes based on the property, gaining over 39,400 likes in five days (shown below, left). On November 10th, Instagram[4] page spooked_memes.v4 posted a meme referencing the Pokemon company and organ removal, gaining over 3,800 likes in two days (shown below, right).
On November 11th, Instagram[5] user yourlordandsaviourmemesatan posted a crying SpongeBob meme captioned "'lEt pEoPlE eNjOy tHinGs' people when I rip out their ribcage and eat up all their organs," expanding the premise away from Pokemon fans to fans more generally, gaining over 25,800 likes in a day (shown below).
On November 11th, Twitter[6] user @TheFunny_mp4 posted a version of the meme using the Boss Baby crying image to joke about buying an NFT owner's brain and lungs instead of screenshotting them, gaining over 53,000 likes and 3,600 retweets in a day (shown below, left). On November 12th, Twitter[7] page @weirdrealitymp4 posted an image macro using a Kanye's Blank Stare image and a caption about being anesthetized but conscious during open-heart surgery, gaining over 15,600 likes and 1,300 retweets in under a day (shown below, right).
