Ah, Gottem GGs refers to a series of minimalist MS Paint drawings made by the Super Smash Brothers community that is meant to satirize various fighters' simple edge guarding tools. The drawings, captioned "Ahh gottem, GGs," will typically show a crudely drawn Smash fighter standing at a stage's ledge while doing a simple move that makes it difficult for their opponent to return to the stage. "GGs" is slang for "good game."

Origin

On October 10th, 2019, Twitter^[5] user @PKsparkSSBU posted an MS Paint drawing of Super Smash Brothers Ultimate character Ness holding his yoyo off the side of a ledge. The drawing is captioned "ah, gottem ggs" (tweet and image shown below, left and right). The image received over 100 retweets and 570 likes prior to being removed.

The phrase "ah, gottem ggs" was used in references to this move on social media in the month following @PKsparkSSBU post.^[2][3] A November 9th post by Twitter^[4] user @BaMPython called the Ness drawing the "original" iteration of the meme.

Spread

The meme began trending within the Smash community in early November 2019. For example, on November 8th, 2019, Redditor LilDreamer32 posted to /r/SuperSmashBrothersUltimate^[1] an MS Paint drawing of the Super Smash Brothers Ultimate fighter Charizard performing a flame breath at the edge of a stage. The drawing is captioned "Ahh, gottem GGs." The picture gained over 80 points in the subreddit (shown below, left). On November 9th, user @demoonside^[6] posted an example showing Pirahna Plant, gaining over 500 retweets and 2,700 likes (shown below, right).

In the years since the meme's November 2019 peak in virality, variations have been made for DLC fighters added to the game. For example, on October 1st, 2020, Redditor ProNerdy posted an example of the meme^[7] using Steve from Minecraft (shown below, left). Similar memes have been made featuring the roster from Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. For example, on July 15th, 2021, Know Your Meme user Alpha Shitlord made an example using a Chalkzone fighter, gaining over 20 likes (shown below, right).
