The Christmas Gas Prank or Diesel Prank is a Christmas-themed practical joke in which the prankster films themselves telling someone, usually their dad or significant other, that they filled their car with diesel fuel, referring to it as "Christmas gas," thinking that the gas pump was made green in celebration of Christmas. The prank was popularized on TikTok as early as November 2022 and saw another wave of popularity in December 2023.

Origin

While it's unconfirmed who came up with the prank, one of the earliest viral examples was posted in two parts on November 12th and 13th by TikToker^[1][2] @berkley.andrus, in which she calls her brothers and tells them she filled the car with "Christmas gas," meaning diesel, telling him that she thought the pump was green as a Christmas decoration (shown below, left and right). The videos gained over 4.2 million and 1.7 million views respectively in a year.

The Christmas gas prank became increasingly popular throughout 2022, resulting in numerous viral examples. On December 7th, 2022, YouTuber^[3] BoreCure posted a compilation of TikTokers pulling the prank, garnering over 930,000 views in a year (shown below). On December 16th, DailyMail^[4] published an article on a now-deleted TikToker's version of the prank.

The prank had another wave of popularity around Christmas 2023. On November 29th, 2023, TikToker^[5] @mariahandbill posted a version of the prank, garnering over 7.5 million views in a month (shown below, left). On the same day, TikToker^[6] @thatssopar posted a version of the prank that gained over 4.5 million views in a month (shown below, right).

On December 6th, TikToker^[7] @sammandjordan posted a video of the prank, garnering over 1.6 million views in two weeks (shown below).
