Reputation

Ronaldo is widely considered one of the best football players in the world and is often compared to Argentine footballer Lionel Messi. Earlier in his career, Ronaldo earned a reputation for being arrogant on the field, which he later admitted may have prevented him from gaining more fans around the world.[11] In 2011, Ronaldo was quoted saying "People are jealous of me as I am young handsome and rich" following a Champions League game during which he was tackled several times. In 2014, he apologized for the remark.[12]

Personal Life

Ronaldo was born on February 5th, 1985 in Santo António, Portugal and was named after former United States president Ronald Reagan. In October 2005, Ronaldo was arrested for allegedly raping a woman in London. The following month, Scotland Yard dropped the charges based on insufficient evidence. In July 2010, Ronaldo announced he had become a father and that he had retained full custody of the child.

2009 Rape Allegation

On April 19th, 2017, Der Spiegel[14] published an article about an anonymous allegation from an American woman that Ronaldo had raped her in Las Vegas in 2009, and that lawyers had arranged a $375,000 settlement to buy her silence. On September 28th, 2018, the woman, Kathryn Mayorga, 34, went public with the allegation in Der Spiegel.[15] Her claim is that Ronaldo anally raped her despite her repeated clear protestations. Ronaldo claims the sex was consensual. However, emails between Ronaldo's lawyer and the soccer star from the time of the encounter and settlement appear to confirm that Ronaldo knew the sex wasn't consensual. According to the quotes grabbed by Der Spiegel:

"She said no and stop several times." And furthermore: "I fucked her from the side. She made herself available. She was lying on her side, in bed, and I entered her from behind. It was rude. We didn't change position. 5/7 minutes. She said that she didn't want to, but she made herself available." And further: "But she kept saying 'no.' 'Don't do it.' 'I'm not like the others.' I apologized afterwards."

As for the silence settlement, Mayorga's lawyer Leslie Mark Stovall is quoted as saying "those documents are evidence of a criminal conspiracy to conceal and obstruct the prosecution of that sexual assault," which is why the case has gone public.

Ronaldo's lawyers denied the allegation.[16] They called the report by Der Spiegel "blatantly illegal" on the basis of slander, while Ronaldo stated the claims were "Fake, fake news" on Instagram live.
