On October 16, 1995, the popular alternative rock band Smashing Pumpkins released the lead single of their third studio album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, titled "Bullet with Butterfly Wings."

It has since become one of their most famous songs. It is often quoted and memed for its indelible lyrics, like the opening line "The world is a vampire/Sent to drain."

The meme got popular because of its reference to the Smashing Pumpkins song, however it has since become its own entity. The phrase is often used on gifs or memes of all kinds, however its most popular gifs are usually callbacks to the lyrics of the Smashing Pumpkins.
