Overview

Equatorial Guinea Sex Scandal refers to a sex scandal revolving a leak of over 400 sex tapes of Baltasar Ebang Engonga, a high-ranking Equatorial Guinea civil servant, having sexual intercourse with wives of his colleagues, subordinates, government officials, relatives, and other single and married women. The scandal unfolded in the African country in early November 2024 as the videos were circulated on WhatsApp and Telegram, later achieving global spread, with Engonga becoming a subject of memes.

History

In late October 2024, over 400 videos of director of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF) Baltasar Ebang Engonga, also known by his nickname Bello ("Handsome") engaging in intercourse with various women, recorded by Engonga himself, were leaked on WhatsApp and Telegram, spreading to Facebook, TikTok and X in early November 2024. The videos depicted Engonga having unprotected sex with his female subordinates, wives of his colleagues and other government officials and wives of his relatives, including his brother and uncle, among other single and married women (photograph of Engonga shown below).^[1][2] The videos were filmed in hotel rooms, houses and Engonga's personal office.

On November 1st, 2024, Equatorial Guinea news website AhoraEG^[1] made a news post about the leaked videos being spread on social media, reporting that Engonga, a married father of six at that time under arrest over embezzlement charges, was being investigated over "possible crime against public health", with concerns being raised over possible spread of sexually transmitted diseases (photograph of Engonga with his colleagues, some of whom appeared in the leaked videos, shown below).

On November 4th, 2024, X^[3][4] / Twitter accounts @AfricaFactsZone and @kenyasgossips made posts about the sex scandal, which gained over 13.5 million views, 8,700 reposts and 44,000 likes and over 27.2 million views, 8,000 reposts and 101,000 likes, in one day, respectively (post by @kenyasgossips shown below).

Starting on November 4th, 2024, content related to the discussion, including photographs of Engonga, the leaked sex tapes and still images from the tapes were widely circulated on X. On November 4th, 2024, X^[5] account @RealSkepta shared the list of women whom Engonga allegedly had sex with, with the post (shown below) garnering over 380 reposts and 2,500 likes in one day.

Later that day, X^[6] user @GriffinIsoe shared one of the leaked videos, which garnered over 1,900 reposts and 14,000 likes in one day. On November 5th, 2024, a video of a woman appearing in one of the videos being confronted over it was widely circulated^[7] on social media (shown below).

Online Reactions

The sex scandal became a viral subject of discussions on social media in early November 2024 as users commented on actions of Engonga and his sex partners. For example, on November 4th, 2024, X^[8] user @the_marcoli_boy shared a photograph of Engonga together with his colleagues, with women who appeared in sex tapes marked with arrows, commenting, "The Equatorial Guinea man is a menace 😭". The post (shown below) garnered over 3,600 reposts and 39,000 likes in one day.

The scandal and Engonga himself became popular subjects of memes shared on Facebook, X, WhatsApp and other social media and messengers. For example, on November 4th, 2024, X^[9] user @Regular_NiceGuy posted a video caption meme referencing the scandal which received over 3,600 reposts and 15,000 likes in one day (shown below).
