Fishposting is a photoshop meme and image macro series based on an image of the recurring background character Fred from the children's animated TV series SpongeBob Squarepants seated at a table and eating a hamburger. On Reddit, various text-based and visual references to the character are considered a form of shitposting or circlejerking, particularly on the /r/me_irl subreddit.

Origin

On January 3rd, 2016, Redditor ThreadlessJon submitted a picture of Fred eating a hamburger in the Spongebob Squarepants episode "Jellyfish Hunter" with the caption "When you're at a party and someone says they are the best at Smash" (shown below). Within nine days, the post gained over 6,900 votes (94% upvoted) and 370 comments on the /r/me_irl[1] subreddit.

On January 6th, Redditor goddamnawfulname submitted a post asking about the "burger eating fish meme" to the /r/OutOfTheLoop[4] subreddit, where it received upwards of 945 votes (87% upvoted) and 75 comments. The same day, Redditor betawho posted an illustrated version of the Fred image with a caption referencing "rare memes" to /r/me_irl,[6] where it garnered more than 5,600 votes (89% upvoted) and 230 comments in one week (shown below, left). Also on January 6th, Redditor MagisterPita posted the same illustration with the caption "When you're at a party and someone says they're the best at worshipping the lord" to /r/DankChristianMemes[7] (shown below, right).

On January 7th, /r/fishpost[3] was launched for examples of the meme. Within five days, the subreddit garnered more than 2,400 subscribers. On January 8th, Redditor JesusCrept submitted a photoshopped variation of the painting "The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci with superimposed pictures of Fred to /r/me_irl[5] (shown below).
