Fremen Ryan Gosling refers to a photograph of Literally Me actor Ryan Gosling photoshopped to look like a Fremen from the Dune novels with deep-blue eyes. An instance of the Goslingwashing trend, the image achieved virality on social media in March 2024 following the premiere of Dune: Part Two.

Origin

On May 31st, 2023, GQ[1] published an interview with actor Ryan Gosling. The interview included a photograph of the actor made by Gregory Harris, showing Gosling looking into the distance and resting his chin on his thumb (shown below, left).

On March 14th, 2024, following the recent premiere of Dune: Part Two, X[2] / Twitter user @Bolverk15 posted an edited version of the image in which Gosling was edited to look like a Fremen from the Dune novel series. The post (shown below, right) received over 900 reposts and 14,000 likes in one day.

Spread

In the following days, the image saw viral spread on X / Twitter as it was humorously captioned. For example, on March 14th, 2024, X[3] user @uncledoomer captioned the image with a LARP joke that received over 2,000 reposts and 41,000 likes in one day (shown below). Later that day, Redditor Un_Royalist shared a screenshot of the post in the /r/NonPoliticalTwitter[4] subreddit, where it received over 4,100 upvotes in one day.

Ryan Gosling as Black Panther refers to a viral edit of an image of the Black Marvel superhero Black Panther in which Literally Me actor Ryan Gosling's head is photoshopped onto the character's body. First posted in early 2018, the image achieved meme status in the following years, being used for shitposting, particularly in the context of race swapping in media.
