About

Fruit Snack Challenge refers to a series of videos of parents conducting an obedience test on their children by placing a bowl of fruit snacks in front of them and instructing them not to eat it until they get back. The trend became popular on TikTok and Instagram in May 2020 for providing wholesome content of children being good or bad.

Origin

On April 27th, 2020, TikToker marcraycray uploaded the first known fruit snack challenge video of her daughter passing the test (shown below). The video gained over 1,300 likes in 10 days.

Spread

On Apri 30th, 2020, TikToker syl.hi uploaded a video of her daughter taking the fruit snack challenge but with Cheetos (shown below, left). The video received over 800 likes in a week. The next day, TikToker fit_mom3 uploaded a video of a toddler failing the challenge and added the hashtags "#fruitsnackchallenge #toddler #favorite #impatient #fyp #welchs #cuteness" (shown below, right). The video accumulated over 27,800 likes in six days.

On May 1st, Instagram user balleralert uploaded a carousel of fruit snack challenge examples with the caption, "New Challenge Alert- #fruitsnackchallenge – would your kid pass or fail?" (shown below left). The post gained over 142,600 likes in six days. On May 6th, Instagram user notkarltonbanks uploaded their child taking the challenge and garnered over 47,800 likes in a day (shown below, right). Stay Hipp[1] published an article on the trend.

From what I recall this is actually a common test in psychology used to examine obedience and delayed gratification in children, known as the Stanford marshmallow experiment (no relation to the Stanford prison experiment); basically a child is asked not to eat a marshmallow given to them until the adult supervisor returns, with the promise of being given more marshmallows to freely eat if they succeed.

One variation I recall featured an experimental group being told that they were being watched by an invisible person who was in the room with them; kids in this group were more likely to obey the adult's instructions and not eat the marshmallow compared to kids in the control group.
