Love This Animal refers to a series of image macros where an animal is shown, captioned, "LOVE THIS ANIMAL" followed by a misspelled version of the animal's name. The original meme, showing a crab mislabeled "crap" was uploaded to Tumblr in April 2021, the format spreading across social media over the course of the year.
Origin
On April 17th, 2021, Tumblr[1] user 00ff80 posted an image macro of a crab captioned, "love this animal the crap," gaining over 95,000 notes in a year (shown below).
Spread
Various Tumblr[2] users reblogged 00ff80's post adding their own variations of the format over the following months, including images of carps labeled "carb" and a squid labeled "squit" (examples shown below). The phrase "love this animal" occasionally devolves into "love this animals" in future variations of the format.
Reposts and new versions of the meme continued to appear on Tumblr over the course of the year, as well as spread outside of Tumblr. On September 29th, 2021, Instagram[3] user epicjoko posted a version of the meme with a moth, gaining over 151,000 likes in seven months (shown below).
On October 11th, Instagram[4] user cursedmojiman posted a version using a rooster, captioned "the cock," gaining over 47,000 likes in six months (shown below). On February 15th, 2022, Facebook[5] page Evil Niqqa Memes 3 posted a version of the meme using a squid, gaining over 870 shares and 1,600 reactions in two months.
