About

Mimic Tear is a special spirit ash summon companion in the action-adventure fantasy game Elden Ring, developed by FromSoftware and released in February 2022. In the game, the Mimic Tear Ash acts as a clone of your character that you can summon in boss fights. which sparked a debate among fans as to whether the summon was overpowered or not. Online, the summon has been featured in numerous memes and jokes regarding the players' overreliance on Mimic Tear to defeat hard bosses, including the new enemies featured in the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC released in June 2024.

Origin

Mimic Tear Ashes is a spirit ash summon in the Elden Ring[1] RPG described as "the result of an attempt by the Eternal City to forge a lord." One of the earliest memes about the summon was posted on Tenor on March 6th, 2022, by user @BillyCraigTheCaracal[2] shortly after the game's release in February 2022. The GIF (seen below) uses the Heart Locket meme with an image of the mimic tear ash paired with the phrase "mimic tear my beloved."

Memetic content related to the Mimic Tear Ash grew exponentially throughout 2022, also sparking a viral debate in which players alleged using Mimic Tear summon makes the game way easier. For example, on January 5th, 2024, TikTok[3] user @xeloboardd posted a video fighting Mohg, Lord of Blood alongside his Mimic Tear summon (seen below, left), which amassed more than 369,000 plays and 35,000 likes in six months. On December 28th, 2024, TikToker[4] @octobersveryown616 added the exploitable Homeless Man Doing Kung Fu to represent a Mimic Tear fighting the boss Malenia, Blade of Miquella. The post (seen below, right) garnered over 921,000 plays and 157,000 likes in seven months.

I'm sad the Mimic Tear quest got cut, as having an overpowered summon be locked behind a quest will always feel more rewarding than simply finding it in a chest somewhere, and would give it some personality beyond just copying the player.
