"Odio Ser Pobre" (English: "I Hate Being Poor") is a phrase said by the protagonist of the 2010 Mexican telenovela Teresa. Actress Angelique Boyer repeats the catchphrase throughout the show's one-year airing on TV, leading to the creation of image macro memes and reactions images to be shared on social media inspired by her character.

Origin

On August 2nd, 2010, the remake of the 1959 Mexican telenovela Teresa^[1] started to air on the Canal de las Estrellas network. The show follows the story Teresa Chavez (played by Angelique Boyer), an ambitious and manipulative woman who will do anything to get what she wants. On March 21st, 2016, YouTube^[2] user Noticiasde Novelas uploaded a trailer of the telenovela, receiving 82,000 views and 1,100 likes in seven years (seen below).

On April 2nd, 2011, YouTube^[3] user Haphazard Notions uploaded one of the earliest scenes in which Teresa says her catchphrase "Odio ser pobre." The video (seen below) garnered 131,000 views and 316 likes in 12 years.

On August 2nd, 2014, Memedroid^[3] user @nickky855 uploaded an image macro featuring Teresa with the overlay text in Spanish "odio ser pobre" and a prototype version of the iPhone 6 above the image macro. The post (seen below), garnered 658 reactions in nine years.

The catchphrase was also popularized as a TikTok audio trend around September 2020. YouTube^[4] user tiktoksepicos965 posted a compilation video of TikTokers doing the trend, which garnered 13,000 views and 309 likes in two years.
