About
Sayonara You Weeaboo Shits is a catchphrase that appeared to come from the staff of Tumblr in 2016, though in reality it was edited by a prankster to appear that way. In the following years, it became an oft-repeated catchphrase online when a person is announcing they are leaving a social media platform. The phrase saw increased usage in June and early July 2023 on Reddit amidst the API Pricing controversy and Twitter after Elon Musk said he would limit the number of posts a person there could see in a day.
Origin
Around April 1st, 2016, the Tumblr staff posted an update regarding the year's April Fools' Day. Sometime before April 3rd, 2016, user @girlfoxcock[6] edited the text of the post to read, "for april fools we’re deleting this entire site sayonara you weeaboo shits." The original post is inaccessible, but archived logs of the post first appeared on April 3rd, 2016, on The Wayback Machine,[1] suggesting the edit was made between the 1st and the 3rd. The post gained over 1.2 million notes in seven years (reblog by funnyanimeshit[2] shown below).
Spread
Over the following years, the post was regularly reblogged on April 1st, as well as celebrated on a number of social media platforms. For example, on April 1st, 2020,[3] it was reposted to the subreddit /r/Tumblr,[3] where it gained over 5,700 points in three years.
In 2023, the catchphrase saw increased usage on Reddit and Twitter amidst controversies that caused users on both sites to announce their intent to leave. For example, on June 11th, 2023, Redditor and Tumblr user kooldewd123 shared the post both on Tumblr and /r/curatedtumblr,[4] gaining over 180 points in three weeks (shown below, left). On July 1st, multiple Twitter users posted the phrase as they feared the new post limit feature would kill the site (examples shown below, right).
On July 1st, 2023, Tumblr user fexalted[5] parodied Elon Musk's announcement of post limits with the phrase, gaining over 16,000 notes in two days (shown below).
