About

Vem aí or It's Coming in English refers to a catchphrase created for a political jingle that repeatedly says "vem ai" (it's coming). It stems from a political campaign ad from 2018 for the lawyer and former Big Brother Brasil participant Adelia Soares, which was repurposed on social media as a meme. Internet users cropped the clip of Adelia in black and white with the phrase "vem ai" at the bottom of the image for reaction images.

Origin

On September 17th, 2018, the Brazilian lawyer Adelia Soares[1] uploaded the official jingle for her Congress candidacy on her YouTube channel.[2] The video has garnered 128,708 views and 4,900 likes in five years (seen below). The first usage of the catchphrase as a meme is unknown.

Spread

After the jingle's release, some people started to use frames from the video and other images of Adelia alongside the phrase "vem aí" (present on the candidacy video), which first spread on Twitter and Facebook. It grew in interest throughout 2019, and the video inspired other variations, with frames from the electoral campaign or other images of the lawyer and related phrases, such as "veio aí," "será que vem aí?" and "não veio aí," among others. One early edit of the clip comes from Tenor, uploaded on August 15th, 2019 by Tenor[5] user matheustalles, who humorously distorted Soares's appearance (seen below).

The meme was also present on WhatsApp after the update on the app that allowed stickers in its conversations. Twitter[3] user @vinilasserre explained all the variations of the "Vem aí" meme on April 25th, 2020. The post received 17 likes and 2 retweets in three years (seen below).

The meme is sometimes used as a reaction clip, often in response to comments on WhatsApp. The following GIF, which has become one of the more prominent formats of the reaction meme, was uploaded to Tenor[4] by user packdegifs on April 17th, 2020.
