About

What Your Gun Sound Like?, also written What Yo Gun Sound Like?, refers to an internet challenge and social game on TikTok where the video creator asks their friends to make gunshot sounds to show them what kind of gun they hypothetically tote. The trend started in early 2022 and spread to other platforms like YouTube.

Origin

On April 6th, 2022, TikToker[1] jaylen4pf posted a video where he's in a classroom with his male friends, asking them all, "What your gun sound like?" In one month, the video received roughly 36,100 plays and 5,800 likes (shown below).

Spread

Also on April 6th, 2022, TikToker[2] joukkkkk posted a similar video, earning roughly 2,400 plays in one month (shown below, left). However, the trend received engagement en masse starting on April 8th, when TikToker[3] mikeiooo posted a video that earned roughly 1.1 million plays and 273,500 likes in one month (shown below, right).

The trend started to be replicated by YouTubers in late April 2022. For instance, on April 25th, YouTuber[4] AwaPrime posted a, "What does your gun sound like?" video that earned roughly 1,600 views in two weeks.

Going into May 2022, the challenge started to receive more ironic iterations. For instance, on May 15th, TikToker[5] jimmyy.hernandezz posted a video of his friends making gunshot noises but being overtly ridiculous with them, earning roughly 753,700 plays and 130,200 likes in one day (shown below).
