About

Wii Menu Parodies, also known as Wii Desktop Meme, refers to an exploitable video of the Nintendo Wii console menu screen which became a viral TikTok trend in September 2024, combined with a CapCut video template that shows a cursor clicking on a screen in the menu zooming into a different video. Most TikTokers use the template to make memes by adding random videos, images or references to other viral humoristic content.

Origin

On October 23rd, 2015, YouTube user @rapidbeta[1] posted the earliest known meme editing Drake's Hotline Bling" music video to Nintendo Wii's menu display (seen below). The video amassed over 46,000 views and 406 likes in nine years.

Spread

Almost a decade later, on August 5th, 2023, the Wii menu display was uploaded to TikTok's editing application CapCut[2] by Tails Fan. The template allows users add videos and images into the menu. The template grew as an exploitable meme over the course of a year on the video platform, in which users added memes and other viral videos to the Nintendo console desktop.

For example, on September 12th, 2024, TikTok[3] user @chiefgreenscreens uploaded a greenscreen version of the Wii menu video (seen below), amassing over 3.3 million plays and 193,000 likes in a month.
