A Group Of Misfits Turned Close Friends or Idiot Leader Who Brought Them Together and Routinely Put Them All In Danger is a variation of the person on leash image macro meme in which five people are shown with one devious looking person on a leash, the five labeled "a group of misfits turned close friends" and the leashed person labeled "Idiot leader who brought them together and routinely put them all in danger." The format was first posted to X (Twitter) and Tumblr in November 2023 and became the subject of edits over the following months.
Origin
On November 16th, 2023, X[1] user @_ADWills posted a meme template based on the "person on leash" meme adding four additional men behind the person on a leash, the group labeled, "A group of misfits turned close friend" and the person on the leash labeled, "Idiot leader who brought them together and routinely put them all in danger," garnering over 88,000 likes in four months (shown below). It was posted to the artist's Tumblr[2] page the next day, garnering over 41,700 notes in the same span of time.
Spread
The meme became the subject of edits over the following months, using the people to represent characters from various fandoms. On November 17th, 2023, X[3][4] users @Tiredtriangle and @vampytoasty posted versions of the meme that gained over 4,200 likes and 1,200 likes respectively in four months (shown below, right).
On March 4th, 2024, Tumblr[5] user dededaio posted a version of the meme referencing Kirby that garnered over 73,000 notes in two days (shown below).

Person On Leash refers to a minimal line drawing of an unenthused person holding another person with a devious smile on a leash as if holding them back from doing something. The image grew in prominence as an exploitable starting in late 2020. In early 2022 photoshops and redraws of the drawing became popularized on TikTok along with a sped-up mashup of the songs "American Boy" by Estelle and "Chanel" by Frank Ocean. The format is an extension of the ship dynamics meme, which highlights aspects of popular shipping dynamics.
