On November 16th, 2023, X^[1] user @_ADWills posted a meme template based on the "person on leash" meme adding four additional men behind the person on a leash, the group labeled, "A group of misfits turned close friend" and the person on the leash labeled, "Idiot leader who brought them together and routinely put them all in danger," garnering over 88,000 likes in four months (shown below). It was posted to the artist's Tumblr^[2] page the next day, garnering over 41,700 notes in the same span of time.

Spread

The meme became the subject of edits over the following months, using the people to represent characters from various fandoms. On November 17th, 2023, X^[3][4] users @Tiredtriangle and @vampytoasty posted versions of the meme that gained over 4,200 likes and 1,200 likes respectively in four months (shown below, right).

On March 4th, 2024, Tumblr^[5] user dededaio posted a version of the meme referencing Kirby that garnered over 73,000 notes in two days (shown below).
