Draw Fanart of a Character On-Model vs. In Your Style is a fan art trend in which participants draw a chosen character as close to their canon design as possible next to the same character designed in their own style. The trend began in late May 2023 when Twitter user TAGASAING posted a blank template explaining the trend's rules and was further popularized on Twitter in mid-June as artists quote-retweeted the post with their artwork, also spreading to sites including TikTok and DeviantArt. The template is similar to the "Canon, Fanon, Your Design" trend.
Origin
On May 31st, 2023, Twitter[1] user @TAGASAING posted a fan art template with two squares. The top of the template is captioned, "Draw fanart of a character…," the left square is captioned, "on-model/as close to canon as possible," and the right square is captioned, "In your style with your headcanons." The post garnered over 30,000 likes and 6,100 quote retweets in three weeks (shown below).
Spread
The trend became notably popularized throughout June 2023, with artists frequently sharing their artwork using the template as quote-retweets to @TAGASAING's original post. For example, on June 11th, 2023, Twitter[2] user @DingityDingus posted artwork of Princess Daisy, garnering over 5,900 likes in 10 days (shown below, left). On June 12th, Twitter[3] user @Shardanic_Art posted artwork of Adventure Time character Marcelene, garnering over 22,700 likes in roughly the same span of time (shown below, right).
On June 14th, Twitter[4] user @keibleh posted a version of the trend featuring Makima from Chainsaw Man, garnering over 40,000 likes in a week (shown below).
In the same span of time, the trend also spread to TikTok[5][6] with numerous users posting videos in which they film themselves drawing over the template (examples shown below). Versions of the trend were also uploaded to sites including Newgrounds[7] and DeviantArt[8] that same month.
