Overview

Marvel: Eternals Trailer refers to the name of a comic book series and movie that recently had a trailer released on May 24th, 2021. The comics and movie revolve around a group of immortal, super-powered beings called "eternals" who have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the beginning, but not interacting with any characters or plot points until now. Upon release, the trailer generated immense hype online, becoming the fastest seen trailer for a movie ever. The film is expected to be released in November 2021.

Background

The Eternals is a comic made by Jack Kirby back in July 1976. The idea wasn't fully realized and brought into the greater Marvel lore until Neil Gaiman made a new series in 2006. When Marvel was putting together films for phase four, it was a surprise to many that Eternals was getting a movie, as they were still relatively unknown. Hype for the film has grown steadily, as the plot and character lore leaves a lot to be explored. This excitement is what lead to the trailer, posted[1] to the Marvel Entertainment YouTube channel on May 24th, 2021, to have over 15.5 million views in two days (shown below).

Online Reactions

It was reported by Deadline[2] that just 24 hours after the trailer was released on social media, it had attained 77 million views, making it the fastest seen trailer by any movie in history (shown below)

Reactions from people online varied. There were people who were finally happy to receive some sort of info about the Eternals movie, and also those who expressed enjoyment at the casting choices. This is the case with Twitter[3] user @Ironlang, who tweeted his excitement at seeing Angelina Jolie in a main character role (shown below).

Other Twitter users took the trailer's message about the Eternals existing but staying out of affairs and decided to use that for meme material. These memes reference the quote and then talk about various issues that the Avengers had to deal with. This is seen in the tweet[4] by @MrNiceGuy513, using a reaction picture from the film Dazed and Confused (shown below).
