Forever Resentful Mother is an advice animal image macro series featuring a photo of a middle-aged woman holding a glass of red wine with captions that portray her as emotionally manipulative and bitter about her children’s existence.

Origin

Redditor MidnRainbow submitted the first instance to the /r/adviceanimals^[1] subreddit in a post titled "Introducing: Forever Resentful Mother" on January 25th, 2012, which included the caption "Do your godamned chores / I had a C-section for you" (shown below, right). Prior to being archived, the post received over 2,800 up votes and 115 comments.

  

The theme of dysfunctional motherhood has been previously explored through the advice animal series sheltering suburban mom and single mom, as well as characters in popular sitcoms, such as Lucille Bluth from the comedy television series Arrested Development.

On January 26th, 2012, FunnyJunk^[4] user ThePhotoBomber submitted a post titled "Forever Resentful Mother", which featured an image macro with the caption "You have multiple girlfriends / Like Father, like son" (shown below).

The same day, the viral content site BuzzFeed^[3] published a post titled “The Best of the Forever Resentful Mother Meme”, highlighting several notable examples from the series. Also on January 26th, the meme was mentioned in a post titled “Meme Machine: 5 Hilarious Viral Topics Trending Right Now” on the tech blog Mashable^[5] and another post on the parenting blog Strollerderby.^[7] On the following day, the Internet news blog UpRoxx^[9] published a post titled “Meme Watch: It’s About Time We Gave ‘Forever Resentful Mother’ Her Own Feature" with a slideshow of notable examples from the series. As of September 2012, the original Quickmeme^[2] page has accumulated over 1,300 submissions and additional examples can you found on Tumblr^[8] under the tag “#forever resentful mother.”

Lucille Bluth Comparison

Several posts on Reddit compared the advice animal character to Lucille Bluth (played by Jessica Walter) from the television sitcom Arrested Development. Shortly after the emergence of Forever Resentful Mother, a “Resentful Mother FIXED”^[6] Quickmeme page was created using a screen capture of the Bluth matriarch, accompanied by captions featuring quotes from the television show.
