Goyang Nasi Padang (Eng. Padang Rice Dance) refers to a viral video of a kid dancing in front of and inside of an Indonesian Nasi Padang restaurant with the 2017 song "Goyang Nasi Padang" by Duo Anggrek playing in the background. The dance gained popularity with users making remixes that showed different personalities and characters dancing to the song, often by using ViggleAI.

Origin

On March 28th, 2024, TikTok[1] user @prince_bennedict1 uploaded a video of a boy dancing in front of and inside of a Nasi Padang restaurant. The video received more than 352,000 views in one month (shown below). Nasi Padang is a famous part of Indonesian cuisine that consists of a variety of small plates eaten with rice.

Starting in April 2024, the video gained popularity with edits of characters dancing to it, often made using ViggleAI. For example, on April 18th, 2024, Facebook[2] user Timothy North uploaded an edit changing the kid to Indonesian internet personality and cryptocurrency investor Timothy Ronald. The video received 906 reactions and more than 1,800 shares in one week (shown below, left). On the same day, Facebook[3] user Nami Fakajima Katsuki uploaded another version which showed the employee behind the kid dancing instead. The video received 910 reactions and more than 1,200 shares in one week (shown below, right).

On April 9th, 2024, the official TikTok account of the Italian football club Juventus uploaded a video of one of its player doing the dance. The since-deleted video received more than 9 million views in two weeks.[4] On April 6th, 2024, the Korean drama/Kpop fan account @kdramaarenaid posted a version of the video (seen below left) which earned over 400,000 likes and 2.7 million views in three weeks.[6] On April 18th, 2024, TikTok user @quasomedia uploaded a similar edit showing the employee of the shop from the original video doing the dance instead of the child. That video received more than 2.5 million views and nearly 200,000 likes in one week (shown below, right).[5]
