Katya the Witch is an anthropomorphic character designed by artist NewTypeHero resembling a human witch with several cat features, including a tail, claws and ears. The character was first posted to Twitter in March 2020 and became increasingly popularized over the following years as NewTypeHero continued to draw her in artwork and webcomics, inspiring fan art.

Origin

On March 3rd, 2020, Twitter^[1] user and artist @Newtype_Hero_ posted three drawings of a then-unnamed original witch character with several cat features (shown below). The post gained over 650 likes in two years.

The artist posted another image of the witch to Twitter^[2] that day captioned, "Wow, people really like her," gaining over 390 likes in two years (shown below, left). On March 5th the artist held a poll on Twitter^[3] to decide her name, with "Katya" winning against "Katherine" and "Other (pls comment)." On the same day, the artist posted a new image of Katya to Twitter^[4] where she's dancing with a skeleton, gaining over 250 likes in two years (shown below, right).

NewTypeHero continued to draw Katya over the following years along with his other characters. On March 13th, 2020, Twitter^[5] user @Toarsian posted a piece of fan art depicting Katya with a copy of the game Witch It, gaining over 100 likes in two years. On July 5th, the artist posted a drawing of Katya to Twitter^[6] that garnered over 580 likes and 80 retweets in two years (shown below). On October 28th, NewTypeHero started posting his Katya artwork to Newgrounds,^[7] starting with the same image. On October 31st the artist posted a drawing to Twitter^[8] that gained over 1,200 likes in two years.

On January 1st, 2021, the artist posted a drawing of Katya to Twitter^[9] with a drink captioned, "Let it be the year of Katya," gaining over 950 likes in a year. That year, NewTypeHero started making comics using the character. On January 25th, he posted a comic about Katya to Twitter,^[10] gaining over 4,600 likes in a year (shown below).

On February 13th, Twitter^[11] user @Casroder posted a piece of fanart depicting Katya, gaining over 2,100 likes in a year (shown below). On August 6th, he posted a comic to Newgrounds^[12] referencing the increase in fan art about Katya, gaining ver 1,200 views in a year.

Katya continued to grow in popularity in 2022. On June 3rd, 2022, the artist posted a comic to Twitter^[13] captioned "Non-canon witchpost" showing Katya lounging outside. A child tells her she was forbidden from reading Harry Potter as a kid and Katya says, "Good. LMAO." The post gained over 29,800 likes in three weeks (shown below). On June 23rd, the artist posted a piece of artwork to Twitter^[14] that gained over 6,500 likes in under a day.
