About
Piranha Plant Gang, sometimes stylized #PlantGang, refers to the semi-ironic fandom for the Piranha Plant fighter in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. The term has been popularized by notable Super Smash Brothers players such as Mang0 and Alpharad.
Origin
On November 1st, 2018, Nintendo revealed the final group of fighters to be joining Super Smash Brothers Ultimate as well as the first downloadable content (DLC) fighter, Piranha Plant from the Super Mario series.
Spread
The addition of Piranha Plant was quickly joked about by Smash Brothers fans. The day of the announcement, YouTuber IlluminatdotIMG posted a remixed video of footage from the Nintendo Direct announcement of the Piranha Plant fighter titled "THIS POST WAS MADE BY PIRANHA PLANT GANG," parodying the trending This Post Was Made By X Gang format popular at the time. A subreddit, /r/plantgang[2] was launched on November 2nd, 2018.
On November 5th, 2018, Alpharad[1] brought the term "Plant Gang" to a larger audience, expressing his excitement for the upcoming character (shown below, left). On November 19th, Redditor chadpiranhaplant[3] posted to /r/smashmemes a Virgin vs. Chad meme tying in Waluigi's Smash Snub to the announcement (shown below, right).
The term grew in popularity with the release of Piranha Plant as a DLC character on January 30th, 2019. That day, many videos of Piranha Plant play were uploaded to YouTube referending #PlantGang. Mang0 streamed himself playing the character while saying "Plant Gang" (shown below, left). User TheKeefCrew posted a video titled "CEO OF PLANT GANG," gaining over 55,000 views (shown below, right).
