About
Poor vs. Rich Outfit Comparison refers to an exploitable template that contrasts two characters side-by-side based on their clothing, focusing on the price of their clothing. The man on the left is wearing expensive, designer items and is labeled "Poor" while the man on the right is wearing cheap clothing and is labeled "Rich." Over time, the price arrows pointing to the "Rich" man became replaced with the word "Stolen." The original image was created by @john_lee_official (the same guy who made the It’s Up To You To Break Generational Trauma template). The precursor image was uploaded to Facebook in 2018.
Origin
On March 5th, 2018, the Facebook[1] page Useful DIY and Mixed Fun posted an image showing two men labeled "Rich" and "Poor." The "Rich" man was wearing expensive clothing and the "Poor" man was wearing reasonably-priced clothing. The post gained roughly 8,500 reactions and 29,000 shares in five years (shown below, left). Two years later, on November 20th, 2020, Instagram[2] user @john_lee_official posted his own version of the same image, inserting his cartoon self. His post received roughly 38,100 likes in three years (shown below, right).
On February 21st, 2021, Redditor Bancaghedon posted the first discovered meme to use the template to /r/okbuddyretard, [3] showing the guy from the 19 Dollar Fortnite Card video. The post gained roughly 20,000 upvotes in two years (shown below).
Spread
On May 4th, 2021, a new iteration was shared by a since-deleted Redditor to /r/okbuddyretard[4] that showed Shrek in human clothing with every arrow reading, "Stolen." The post gained roughly 28,200 upvotes in two years (shown below, left). The meme was reposted to Instagram [5] in the days that followed, leading to an iteration posted by Instagram[6] user @arenaxdd_ on May 20th, 2021, that showed the Minecraft skin of YouTuber ElRichMC, gaining roughly 14,000 likes in two years (shown below, right).
Going into 2022 and 2023, various iterations surfaced across social media platforms. For instance, on August 7th, 2022, an iteration about Frank Ocean's Cock Ring was posted by Instagram[7] user @ilovehenny_xcx, earning roughly 7,500 likes in eight months (shown below).
