About

Shrimp after Chiropractor (Japanese: 整体に行ったエビ, Seitai ni Itta Ebi) refers to a 3-panel comic strip by the artist Sattou in which a shrimp gets its back unusually straightened out after going to a chiropractor. In September 2023, it became fodder for exploitable parodies on Twitter / X.

Origin

On August 7th, 2014, Sattou posted the original comic on X (then Twitter), receiving over 24,000 reposts and 30,000 likes in nine years (shown below).[1] While this post didn't become a meme template until 2023, the creator became very popular in this period through his characteristic drawing style depicting characters' shoulders as extremely large, which made fans and even online news media call him the nickname "The Man of Shoulder-Width" (肩幅の人, Katahaba no Hito) in the late-2010s.[2]

Spread

In June 2023, the 9-year-old image regained popularity after the creator launched an X account for the shrimp called "Shrimp after Chiropractor" (@seitaiebi) and reposted it on the 24th,[3] gaining over 17,200 reposts and 53,200 likes by the end of August. Japanese online news site ITmedia NetLab reported the shrimp's new popularity on July 19th.[4]

Starting in September, many parodies started flooding on X, thanks to the creator for providing a template image of the chiropractor on August 31st.[5] Those parodies are usually named in the phrasal template "X after Chiropractor," following the original's naming. For example, on September 1st, user @Syan_SAN135[6] posted a parody with Clodsire, gaining over 270 reposts and 1,000 likes in nearly one week (shown below, left). On August 31st, user @gimsnoc[7] posted a parody featuring the Dreamcast logo, gaining over 210 retweets and 290 likes in one week (shown below, right).

This Is What Happens When I Draw Hatsune Miku

On September 4th, 2023, Twitter user hatsune_negame used the template to post a tweet (shown below) in which Hatsune Miku enters a building with their Twitter icon, and exits portraying hatsune_negame's art style.[8] They captioned the tweet, This is what happens when I draw Hatsune Miku.

The tweet started a separate fan art trend where artists joked about how their personal style affected how they drew Miku.
